Churches
The parish church was first documented in 1213, with a dedication to St Stefano. The church changed its patron to St Vittore in 1800, borrowing the saint from a nearby ‘pieve’country church once to be found along the road to Asti. The parish church was re-built several times and was enlarged during the 17th century. In 1726, a Baroque facade was added and the church came under the patronage of a local branch of the Roero family, who had their family vault there. The interior is richly decorated.
Within the Town Hall square, the church of St Giovanni is to be found. This church was built from between 1700 and 1714 by the Confaternity of the Black ‘Disciplinanti’ (‘battuti neri’) a religious society founded in 1601. It is Baroque in style with a two -layered facade, twinned columns and pilasters. The interior is decorated with elaborate stucco. Recently restored, it is due to be become the Roero Tourist Office.
At the far eastern end of the ancient ‘villanova’ town outlay, close to where the main gate and the moat used to be, the church of St Bernardino is situated. This church is mentioned in local documents from the beginning of the 16th century and belonged to the White ‘Disciplinanti’ Religious Order (‘battuti bianchi’). It was later re-built in the Baroque style by master builders Domenico Pianca and Isidoro Torriano. Rebuilding, including intricate decoration, started in 1727 and lasted for several decades.
